W Austin sits right in the heart of downtown, in that sweet spot where Austin feels equal parts tech hub and college town. Dubbed the “live music capital of the world.” You’re next door to Austin City Limits Live, surrounded by walkable dining, and just a few blocks from the Colorado River paths.

Since it is downtown, beware if you are driving. Even using valet can be difficult, but I wont go into that as the hotel made good on the experience by comping my parking.

The Room

The room was quite nice, albeit hot when we checked in. It took about 2 hours or so to cool it down when we turned on the AC. However once the desired temperature was reached it stayed at a nice cool 66 the entire time.

The bed was comfortable, the view was nice, the fridge was stocked with every manner of liquor- which made it quite hard to store milk…but I digress. The W isn’t really catering to young families, but the young 20-something party crowd. Maybe my expectations were wrong from the jump.

I enjoyed the rainfall shower as well as the automatic lights on the side of the bed as well as when you go into the bathroom.

Service

The service was hit or miss. In the beginning we ran into a series of missteps that I couldn’t believe for a hotel as renowned as the W. However in the second half they were able to rectify my issues and the service proved to be quite good when it came to food as well.

We had room service and the food I ate wad fantastic. Great burger, good cookies and milk (seems to be an Austin staple), and I enjoyed the pretzels thoroughly.

Breakfast

Breakfast, my favorite part of the hotel stay was amazing. Not only was the food delicious but the people serving the food were friendly and prompt. I don’t have a single but of criticism besides wishing I had room for more.

I had steak and hash-browns with hot sauce and ketchup. Great combo! My wife and I split their pumpkin pancakes- they were to die for! Highly recommend.

Overall Score

I bet you are wondering what I will give this place.

Well I’ll tell you its a 4/5

I would have given it a 3, if they had not salvaged the experience toward the end, but I cannot lie- the food was fire, and the discounts and free parking took the sting out of the initial service. But if you are looking for some place to stay in downtown Austin? Maybe try the Thompson Austin, but if you are looking for a place with surprisingly good food that is open 24/7. This place will do nicely.
