Location
Downtown in the heart of 6th street is where the Thompson Austin is located. I stopped here after staying at the W Austin, and it was maybe two blocks over. There were food trucks all along the street, and they serve good food, just watch out for the displaced locals…and those Austin prices. The diversity of restaurants and shopping is the strength of this location. But be careful, it can go from kitsch to sketch really fast.

The Room
We were very lucky to be upgraded to a corner room. It was very nice and spacious! The bed was as you would expect for hyatt properties (basically perfect), and if it weren’t for the screaming baby I had with me, I would have slept like one.

In the room there was a large, long desk that had a writing area and lighting, and further down were snacks, drinks, and some adult stuff ;) . Beneath the drinks were a mini fridge with some room to store milk, which we appreciated.

The AC was mighty and was able to chill the entire room in less than half an hour! I enjoyed how cool the fans blew as well as how it stayed cool as I desired it.
The design was the room was interesting. It was like a mix of a swanky 1920s speakeasy, and a modern metroplex marvel. The lights around the headboard of the bed and the ones imbedded in the mirrors in the bathroom caught my eyes.

Service
The Valet experience was good. My only complaint was that I had to loop around to valet twice, as the first time the line to check in was too long. Upon checking in, they noticed we had a baby with us and asked if we needed a crib. I was pleasantly surprised by the offer. We didn’t end up requiring it as we brought a bassinet from home with us, but I was glad they had some in house.
We were able to indulge in their daily margaritas that they have between 3-5pm every day. What a cool amenity!
Room service was prompt and accurate, and breakfast was fast, and the waiters were nice and responsive. I have no issues with their service.

Breakfast

Breakfast was a treat! I had a cheeseburger and split some french toast with my wife. The burger was superb, as you had lots of control over how they make it. You could pick the toppings, as well as the type of cheese and sides. Mine was plain with american cheese, just how I like it! I suppose it’s notable that they make their burgers with steak, just like the diners and burger joints of the past. Think Johnny Rockets or Steak N’ Shake.

The fresh toast was some of my favorite fresh toast! It had a berry medley with some banana sauce? I don’t remember what the sauce was, but it was delicious! The atmosphere was what really stood with me. I felt transported back into a time when burgers were 50 cents and jukeboxes were more than just an expensive nostalgic scam.

Overall Score
Overall, I enjoyed this hotel quite a bit. The service was great, the food too. The Hotel was beautifully designed with great accommodations and amenities. But as Amerie once said, It’s just one thing that’s got me tripping. The location.
How are they going to put a Thompson hotel so close to a dangerous part of Austin?
I kid you not, you walk the wrong direction for 6 or 7 minutes, and you will see ladies of the night (during the day), drug addicts, and unsavory characters galore.
I was taken aback by an incident that happened while trying to find some lunch to eat while out with my newborn. Let alone a mass shooting at a club a minute down the street the night before.
If you consider the great service and food, I can just barely recommend this place. Watch your surroundings and don’t wander off too far.
